The definition of epic poem" is a long narrative poem on a serious subject that is written in a grand or elevated style.  It is centered on a larger-than-life hero.

In the cave of the Cyclops, Odysseus and his soldiers were in the cave eating goat cheese that belonged to the Cyclops.  They thought the Cyclops was going to be nice because that is what happens when someone breaks into your house.  So the Cyclops was mad and started to eat them but Odysseus gets him drunk and blinds him.

Odysseus is a hero.  To the Greeks a hero meant you had an extraordinary attributes and Odysseus did definitely.
