West Civ Class Today and Questions

In the beginning of class, we listened to Dylan and Elpris fight about if they were going to present their project today with or without Athan because he wasn't here.  They did rock paper scissors but then Mr. Schick decided that they are going tomorrow and we are going to do textbook work and answer questions

The play is about a guy who is supposed to kill his father but instead he marries his mother.  Then he pulls out spears and pretends to stab his eyes and then pulls two red cloths out of his sleeves and pretends to pull his eyes out.
Comedy is contained scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor.

Plato is A student of Socrates....he taught the idea of a perfectly governed society.  Allegory of the Cave- see shadows but then goes out into the real world and see real things
Aristotle- student of Plato. he questioned the nature of the world and of human belief, thought, and knowledge. He came close to summarizing all the knowledge up to his time. He invented a method for arguing according to the rules of logic....logos, pathos, ethos.  One place to learn everything is called Lyceum.

What steps did Pericles take to strengthen democracy in Athens?

he increased the number of public officials who were paid salaries....now even the poorest citizen could serve if elected or chosen by lot. Now Athens had more citizens engaged in self-government than any other city state in Greece.
What were the battle strategies of Athens and Sparta in the Peloponnesian War?
Athens avoided land battles and attack by sea.  Sparta eventually attacked on land and burned Athen's food supply.
Why do you think some Athenians found the ideas of Socrates so disturbing?
Socrates threatened traditional ways of life by encouraging students to question values and beliefs.
