West Civ Class Today

In West Civ class today we finished going over the information for our test tomorrow.  We started with Julius Caesar, learning that he is a high successful general who conquered Gaul.  He wanted power and made friends with Pompey(a general who conquered Syria and Palestine) and Crassus(the richest man in Rome) . They formed The First Triumvirate.  Caesar then serves in the consul for a year and then appoints himself governor.  He then named himself dictator after that and that is for life.  Caesar was then assassinated on the Senates floor and he was stabbed 23 times.  Octavian (his grand nephew or his adopted son) takes over at age 18 and becomes friends with two people, Mark Anthony (an experienced general) and Lepidus( a powerful politician) . This was now The Second Triumvirate.  Octavian then forced Lepidus to retire and Mark Anthony partners up with Cleopatra.  Octavian then beats both of them in a battle called the Battle of Actium.

Today in Western Civ class, we took more notes from the textbook and learned more about how to take notes accurately for when we go to college.  We took notes on section 1 called City-States in Mesopotamia.  The main idea is the earliest civilization in Asia arose in Mesopotamia and organized into city-states.  This matters now because the development of this civilization reflects a settlement pattern that has occurred repeatedly throughout history.  We also learned about the Fertile Crescent and the geography.  The silt is rich soil that is good for farming and is left behind after floods.  Some environmental issues are unpredictable floods and no natural barriers.  The five characteristics of civilization are advanced cities, specialized workers, complex institutions, record keeping, and improved tech.  City states are cities with area around it.  This is mostly everything we worked on this class!

Western Civ Class Day 4

Today in Western Civ class, we continued taking notes and watching the Guns, Germs, and Steel video.  We learned that Draa is one of the oldest communities grew their own plants 11,500 years ago.  Plant domestication is being able to control what you grow.  Thousands of years ago China frew rice, The Americas grew corn, squash, and beans, and Africa grew sorghum, millet, and yams.  All of these items that were grown were natural and could be stored for a long time unlike Papua New Guinean people who grew sago and it only lasted for a couple of days.  Sago was their main plant so sometimes they would eat spiders too.  Later 2,500 years later New Guineans found goats and created a pen for them.  Before the Industrial Revolution, the used horses or ox to plow dirt.  We learned that there were only 14 animals that have successfully been domesticated.  Finally, at the end of the day, we got to watch Mr.Schick pretend to be a zebra and kick his leg...

Western Civ Class Blog Day 3

Today in Western Civ class we went over our notes that we took on the video called Guns, Germs, and Steel and then Mr. Schick surprised us with a pop quiz about the video.  He thought that since we knew all of our notes that we were ready for the quiz, but I didn't think I was.  The questions on the quiz were easy except for number 3 because I didn't remember the answer.  After we passed the pop quiz in, we went over the answers and I realized I got one wrong.  After we finished the quiz, we got to work on our blogs because Mr. Schick didn't want us to fail our first three blogs, so he gave us a free pass and let us work on all of our blogs that we had to turn in this week.  The class was pretty chill and we just had a nice day.
