Day 1

Ancient Rome and Early Christianity Main Ideas Rome began as a republic, a government in which elected officials represent the people.  Eventually, absolute rulers called emperors seized power and expanded the empire. At its height, the Roman Empire touched three continents Europe, Asia, and Africa.  For several centuries, Rome brought peace and prosperity to its empire before its eventual collapse. Out of Judea rose a monotheistic, or single-god, religion known as Christianity.  Based on the teachings of Jesus of nazareth, it soon spread throughout Rome and beyond. BIG NEWS!!

Today in West Civ class, we got our tests back and we went over the answers.  Mr. Schick had to move several kids back to there original seats because everyone has started to sit wherever they want.  I didn't do as well as i thought i would but thats ok.  After we went over the answers, Mr. Schick informed us that he wont be here for two weeks because he is getting surgery.  We will have a different sub each day and he assigned us work to do each day he isn't here.  I think he wont be here for 8 days of class and he gave us textbook things to do and take notes and write blogs.  he told us that there is a paper on the board and on his desk to tell us what we have to do each day.  We have to put our phones on the case and then sit down and do the work each day!  I hope Mr. Schick will recover well and come back very well and healthy!!

Test Day!

Today in West Civ class we took a test.  I think I did really bad on it because I struggled to remember the information.  I couldn't remember a lot of the different people like Socrates and Plato.  I thought I knew some of the stuff on the test but I struggled with this test a little more because I wasn't exactly sure what was supposed to be on the test because usually Mr. Schick gives us a slideshow and that helps us study but since we didn't have the slideshow i was not exactly sure what would be on the test.  After I finished my test, Gianna, Caleb, and I had to leave class about 15 minutes early to go sing at the assembly for stations of the cross in the gym.  Today was a great day because it was the last day before spring break and I am SO excited to have 10 days off!!!

Review day!

Today in West Civ class, we reviewed for our test that we have tomorrow.  We went over our blogs and notes for all three sections and Mr. Schick gave use some information on what is going to be on the test.  I took some more notes for my blog so I can study well tonight.  We have to know all about the plays and talked about Alexander the Great and all of his amazing accomplishments.  For the test, we need to know the different types of democracy and we need to know who Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.  One test question we need to know is what hubris means.  It means excessive pride.  In section 4, we need to know about Philip II, Alexander the Great, and Darius III.  Section 5 talks about the Hellenistic Culture, Alexandria, Euclid, Archimedes, and Colossus of Rhodes.  The class was really helpful for reviewing for the test tomorrow and I feel confident about the test.

West Civ Section 5 The Spread of Hellenistic Culture

Hellenistic-relating to the civilization, language, art, science, and literature of the Greek world from the reign of Alexander the Great to the late second century.  A blending of culture of Egyptian, Persian, and Indian empire. Alexandria-an Egyptian city founded by Alexander the Great and became the foremost center of the commerce and Hellenistic civilization in Egypt.  Right where the Nile hits the Mediterranean Sea Euclid- a highly regarded mathematician who taught in Alexandria.  Some of his stuff is still being taught today. Archimedes-a Hellenistic scientist who studied in Alexandria, and accurately estimated the value of pi- the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter Colossus of Rhodes-an enormous Hellenistic statue that formerly stood near the harbor of Rhodes.  Largest known Hellenistic sculpture found on the island but it fell due to an earthquake in 225B.C. and the bronze was sold for scrap How did trade contribute to cultural diver...

West Civ Class Today

Today in West Civ, we went over our notes with Mr. Schick and we went through the questions we did for our blogs the other night.  Athan introduced us to his shadow and his name was Caleb.  He seemed to not like Mr. Schick and he looked a little scaried.  We talked about direct democracy and all of the things about theater.  Mr. Schick told us a story about a guy named Sophocles who wrote a play called Oedipus Rex.  It was about a guy who is supposed to kill his father and marry his mother.  The tragedy of the play is that he took two swords and held them up in the air.  Then, he turned around and pretended to take the two swords and stab himself in the eyes with it.  He turns around and pulls two red cloths out of his shirt and pretends to have his eyes bleed and fall out.  Mr. Schick talked about comedy and The Three Stooges and a bunch of other shows I have never heard of because weren't born at that time.

An Amazing Class Today!

Today in West Civ, we had a shadow named Will and he is from Concordia.  I also found out that he plays baseball.  During class we listened to Elpris, Athan, and Dylan do there project on Greece.  The created a rap and named themselves cool name like lil gwach and other stuff.  There was was really good and made everyone laugh.  This was probably my favorite project out of the whole class.  Elpris and Athan did the rap but dylan was like the narrator and asked them questions and stuff.  They showed us a video of the rap and then everyone wanted them to do it in person so they did.  Then, they told us what each line meant and they showed a powerpoint.  Dylan then asked each of the questions and  they answered but like in a cool way then that was the end of the presentation.  It was so good and funny and I am glad I got a video of it!

West Civ Class Today and Questions

In the beginning of class, we listened to Dylan and Elpris fight about if they were going to present their project today with or without Athan because he wasn't here.  They did rock paper scissors but then Mr. Schick decided that they are going tomorrow and we are going to do textbook work and answer questions 1. Defining Terms Direct Democracy is a government which citizens rule directly rather than through representatives. West Civ Class Today

Today in West Civ we watched three groups of people present their projects on Greece.  The first group was Emma, KG, Kendall and Kayla.  They did their project on the Greek gods and goddesses.  Each person picked a god or goddess and then gave a description of them and built something or symbol of each one.  The second group that went was Jackson and Quinn.  They did their project on The Olympics.  They gave some information of when and where the Olympics were held.  They also made videos of the different types of sports that were held in Greece during the Olympics.  The videos were really interesting and kind of funny.  The third group that did a presentation was Brysen and Syd.  They baked food for the class that was eaten by the people in Greece.  It was really good and was made of like dough and some topping of honey.  It was tasty.  I really enjoyed the presentations today!
